Hollow Knight: Silksong Finally Lands September Release Date After Seven-Year Wait

After years of silence, speculation, and memes, Team Cherry has finally delivered the news fans have been waiting for: Hollow Knight: Silksong, the long-anticipated sequel to the critically acclaimed indie hit Hollow Knight, will officially launch on September 4, 2025. The announcement came during Gamescom Opening Night Live, accompanied by a stunning new trailer that showcased gameplay, environments, and the return of beloved composer Christopher Larkin’s haunting score.

Originally announced in 2019, Silksong has endured one of the longest and most mysterious development cycles in recent indie gaming history. What began as a planned DLC for the original game evolved into a full-fledged sequel starring Hornet, a fan-favorite character from the first title. Over the years, Team Cherry offered only sparse updates, leading to a cult-like following that turned the wait into a running joke across gaming forums and social media. But now, the wait is over—and the excitement is real.

According to Team Cherry’s official description, players will take on the role of Hornet, a lethal hunter captured and transported to the mysterious kingdom of Pharloom. The game promises a rich narrative journey filled with ancient mysteries, brutal combat, and emotional depth. “Prepare to battle mighty foes and solve ancient mysteries as you ascend on a deadly pilgrimage to the kingdom’s peak,” reads the Steam listing⁽¹⁾.

🕷️ What’s New in Silksong?

Hollow Knight: Silksong builds on the Metroidvania foundation of its predecessor but introduces a host of new features and mechanics:

  • Over 200 new enemies to battle, including beasts, hunters, and legendary bosses.
  • 40+ boss fights that promise epic, soul-strumming encounters.
  • New crafting system to build weapons, traps, and tools for exploration and combat.
  • Steel Soul Mode for hardcore players seeking an even greater challenge.
  • Expansive new environments like mossy grottos, gilded cities, and misted moors.
  • Orchestral soundtrack composed by Christopher Larkin, returning with new themes and motifs.

Hornet’s movement and combat style are more acrobatic and aggressive than the Knight’s, offering a fresh gameplay experience while retaining the tight controls and atmospheric exploration that made the original game a masterpiece.

🎮 Platforms and Availability

Silksong will be available on PC, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. It will also be a Day One release on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, making it instantly accessible to millions of subscribers⁽³⁾.

📈 Impact on the Indie Scene

The announcement has already sent shockwaves through the indie gaming community. Several smaller studios have delayed their September releases to avoid competing with Silksong’s launch. Titles like CloverPit, Faeland, and Aeterna Lucis have all pushed back their release dates, citing Silksong’s overwhelming hype and visibility⁽⁴⁾.

“We poured our hearts into our little game, so we want to give it the best possible shot,” wrote Panik Arcade, developers of CloverPit, in a statement. “Due to Silksong (can’t wait to play) launching just a day after CloverPit, we decided to delay our release.”
