Brazilian television network Globo has announced temporary schedule changes for its popular soap operas due to coverage of the FIFA Club World Cup 2023. The tournament, taking place in Saudi Arabia from December 12-22, will affect the usual programming of the country's most-watched telenovelas.

Prime-Time Novelas Get New Timeslots

The network's flagship 9pm soap opera "Terra e Paixão" will move to 8:30pm during tournament days, while the 7pm novela "Elas por Elas" will shift to 6:30pm. These adjustments allow Globo to broadcast live matches in their traditional prime-time slots.

"We know our audience doesn't want to miss either the soap operas or the important matches," said Globo programming director Fernando Oliveira. "This temporary schedule ensures fans can follow both."

Weekday Programming Changes

From Monday through Friday this week, the schedule will be as follows:

  • 6:30pm: "Elas por Elas" (normally 7pm)
  • 8:30pm: "Terra e Paixão" (normally 9pm)
  • 10:15pm: Late news program "Jornal da Globo"

The morning and afternoon novelas will maintain their regular schedules. Weekend programming remains unaffected as most matches occur on weekdays.

Special Sports Coverage

Globo will broadcast all matches featuring Brazilian teams Fluminense live. The network has prepared special pre-game shows with analysis from renowned sports commentators and former players.

"The Club World Cup is a major event for Brazilian football fans," said sports director Erico Borgo. "We're committed to providing comprehensive coverage while respecting our entertainment programming."

How to Watch Alternative Options

Viewers who miss the adjusted novela times can:

  • Catch up on Globoplay, the network's streaming platform
  • Watch reruns on cable channel Viva
  • Tune in to the next day's morning rerun

The network expects to return to its regular schedule after December 22, when the tournament concludes. This marks the third consecutive year Globo has adjusted its programming for the Club World Cup.
