Elisabeth Moss Opens Up About Working with Angelina Jolie

Elisabeth Moss, known for her roles in "The Handmaid's Tale" and "Mad Men," recently opened up about her experience working on the set of the 1999 film "Girl, Interrupted." In a candid interview, Moss revealed that she found Angelina Jolie to be incredibly intimidating during the filming of the psychological drama.

Girl, Interrupted," directed by James Mangold, featured a star-studded cast including Winona Ryder, Angelina Jolie, and Elisabeth Moss. The film, based on Susanna Kaysen's memoir, explores the lives of young women in a psychiatric hospital. Moss, who was just 15 years old at the time, played Polly "Torch" Clark, a burn victim with schizophrenia.  Moss described the set as being divided into two distinct camps: the Winona Ryder camp and the Angelina Jolie camp. This division mirrored the on-screen rivalry between Ryder's character, Susanna Kaysen, and Jolie's character, Lisa Rowe. "There were two kinds of camps. There was the Winona Ryder camp and the Angelina Jolie camp," Moss explained. "I was in the Winona Ryder camp. The Angelina Jolie camp was really cool. I was intimidated by the Angelina Jolie camp".

Moss admitted that she felt out of place and not "cool enough" to be part of Jolie's group. "I've spoken to Angelina since then, and she's lovely, but at the time, it was just incredibly intimidating," Moss said. "I never brought it up. I'm sure she would have no idea what I was talking about anyway. I was just definitely not cool enough to be in her camp".

The young actress was in awe of her surroundings and the talent she was working with. "It was like being dropped into the Wizard of Oz. I was so awe-struck by my surroundings and working with Winona and Angelina, and they were so different and interesting".

Despite the intimidation, Moss looks back on her time on the set of "Girl, Interrupted" with fondness. She described the experience as "incredible" and highlighted the impact it had on her career. "I was 15 or 16. My mom was still with me going to set. I was with all these movie stars. Winona Ryder! Angelina Jolie! Clea DuVall! Brittany Murphy! This amazing cast of women".

Elisabeth Moss's reflections on her time working with Angelina Jolie on "Girl, Interrupted" provide a fascinating glimpse into the dynamics of a film set filled with young, talented actresses. While the experience was intimidating for Moss, it also served as a significant milestone in her career, shaping her into the accomplished actress she is today. The divided camps and the awe-inspiring presence of Jolie left a lasting impression on Moss, making "Girl, Interrupted" a memorable chapter in her journey through Hollywood.
